Abstract

This paper attempts to establish the fact that listening and speaking skills have not been properly handled by teachers, especially in this twenty-first century in the early years of schooling. It has discussed some of the factors which militate against effective development of these skills in the learners. Its main thrust is to portray the new approaches and methods with which language should be taught so as to enable the learners develop effective listening and speaking skills in the subject better and to be able to use the language to communicate effectively. In order to achieve this broad objective, emphasis is placed on the use of modern and functional notional approaches to make the learners participate adequately during the language lessons. Such approaches include but not limited to flash cards, picture books and other fun-filled strategies. The modern ways to teach are used specifically to encourage the pupils to study the language with ease and also help them to developing effective listening and speaking skills early in their lives and equip them with the abilities to interpret meaningfully what another speaker of the same language says. Moreover, appropriate recommendations are made to ensure that the teachers are adequately prepared and the pupils sufficiently motivated as a way forward for effective teaching and learning and for better productivity.
