Abstract

Using multimedia and conducting stakeholders’ engagement campaigns are veritable tools for creating awareness of environmental development. This study sought to investigate the use of multimedia and stakeholders’ engagement campaigns to create environmental development awareness among residents of Nembe LGA. The study adopted a mixed-method approach. The theoretical underpinning was the persuasive communication theory. The study’s population comprised all residents of Nembe LGA, and the cluster sampling technique was employed. Findings indicated that the dominant multimedia channels are TV, radio, and town hall meetings. Findings also show that the level of residents’ awareness of environmental development was low before the campaigns and increased tremendously after the campaigns. Based on the findings above, the study concludes that a combination of multimedia and stakeholders’ campaign strategies are effective tools for creating environmental development awareness among residents in Nembe LGA. It was also found that using different media and conducting stakeholders’ engagement campaigns complement the inadequacies of any of the media and reinforce the information in the message. The author, therefore, recommends that government, NGOs, and individuals should make use of the potential of combining multimedia and stakeholders’ engagement campaigns in conducting environmental development awareness amongst others.
